She is a member of The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and The American College of Surgeons, and was previously President of the New England Association of Gynecologic Oncology. Valena completed her medical training at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia as well as postgraduate training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliated Harvard teaching hospital.
